Mini Arch Steel Mills are companies which produces ferrous steel products recycled from scrap steel. Whereas integrated steel mills produce steel products from iron ore in a blast furnace. Mini Mills refine ferrous scrap steel using electric arc furnace or (EAF) technology. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported in 1970 mini mills using electric arc technology only accounted for 10% of steel produced in the US, but by 2006, over half of all ferrous steel products produced in the US came from mini arch mills.
Since the beginning of the mini mill industry, which has become a real game changer for the steel industry, mini mill production of steel products now represents close to 75% percent of total steel produced in the US. Year ending 2021 US mini mill produced roughly 60,173,000 tons of ferrous steel. In fact, the term mini mills are anything but mini. Nucor the leading producer of steel from mini mills started its first operation in Darlington, South Carolina in 1969. Since then dozens of other companies have also taken advantage of the Electric Arch technology. Notably, Nucor went into the steel business by opening several mini mills, and today its production from these mills accounts for 50 percent of its total sales and revenue. In the past decade, dozens of other companies have also learned about the advantages of mini steel mills capabilities, which have become a significant factor in the industry.
